At the close of the Constitutional Convention, a woman asked Benjamin Franklin what type of government the Constitution was bringing into existence. Franklin replied, “A republic, if you can keep it.” And we have kept it. Through thick and thin. We have fought against tyranny and won two world wars defeating those who wished to end our existence.
But today it seems that the enemy is from within. How much longer can we keep our republic? The entitlement mentality among our citizens, and especially our non-citizens, keeps growing by the hour. Only about half of our population currently pay any income taxes, while the other half constantly clamors for them to pay even more.
Abraham Lincoln once said: “Property is the fruit of labor. Property is desirable, is a positive good in the world. That some should be rich shows that others may become rich and hence is just encouragement to industry and enterprise. Let not him who is houseless pull down the house of another, but let him work diligently to build one for himself, thus by example assuring that his own shall be safe from violence.”
The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. And speaking of giving and taking away, has anyone noticed that there is an unemployment problem in this country? Or maybe we should call it an employment problem because there are not enough people employed. In fact there are fewer people working today than there were four years ago.
But with the jobs situation so dismal, here is what the president did:
